Mechanical Seals for the Arctic LNG Project

As part of an import-substitution programme, 30 double cartridge mechanical face seals were supplied for the Arctic LNG project. These seals replaced previously used foreign-made mechanical seals and are designed for extreme conditions, including ultra-low temperatures and continuous exposure to aggressive environments such as seawater. The seals had to meet enhanced wear-resistance and corrosion-resistance requirements.

Technical Features of Double Cartridge MFS

Materials

  • A low-temperature perfluoroelastomer was used to withstand ultra-low temperatures while retaining its properties down to −60°C.
  • Components exposed most heavily to aggressive media are made of super duplex stainless steel, providing high corrosion resistance and strength.

Operating Conditions

  • Temperature range: −60°C to +120°C.
  • Resistance to seawater and other aggressive media.
  • High reliability and long service life under intensive mechanical loads.

Project Features

Compliance with Arctic Requirements

The seals were developed for the specific operating conditions of Arctic facilities. Additional low-temperature, corrosion and wear tests confirmed compliance with project requirements.

Successful Import Substitution

The supply of double cartridge MS formed part of an import-substitution programme aimed at equipping Russian projects with domestic equipment capable of replacing foreign equivalents.

Enhanced Wear Resistance

The use of low-temperature perfluoroelastomer and super duplex stainless steel provided enhanced wear and corrosion resistance, which is critical for operation in Arctic conditions.

Installation, Commissioning and Testing

The seals were successfully installed and commissioned. Tests confirmed their reliability and compliance with the stated specifications.

Implementation Results

  • Continuous equipment operation under extreme conditions was ensured.
  • High corrosion resistance significantly extended seal service life.
  • The effectiveness of domestic materials and technologies under the import-substitution programme was confirmed.
  • Dependence on foreign suppliers of mission-critical equipment was reduced.

Conclusion

The supply of double cartridge mechanical face seals for the Arctic LNG project was a successful example of implementing domestic equipment capable of operating under the most challenging conditions. The project confirmed that Russian manufacturers can create products meeting international standards and contribute to the development of Arctic fields.
